Home Internet Business – The Emotional Bank Account

Posted by admin on Jan 26, 2010

This is a metaphor put forth by Stephen Covey in The Seven Habits. It describes the amount of trust that’s been built up in a relationship. We make deposits into an Emotional Bank Account through courtesy, kindness, honesty, and keeping commitments. In this way we build up a reserve.

A high level of trust makes communication easier and more effective. You will find that trust is the basis of a successful Internet Income Opportunity and Direct Sales Marketing.

We make withdrawals from this Emotional Bank Account through discourtesy, unkindness, dishonesty, and betraying trust, to name a few.

It takes constant deposits to maintain a high level of trust in our Emotional Bank Account.

There are six ways to make deposits to our Emotional Bank Accounts:

- Understanding others, learning what they want, what they consider to be a deposit, what is important to them. This is not about what is important to us.
- Attending to the little things constitutes a major deposit.
- Keeping commitments and promises make great deposits while breaking promises is a major withdrawal.
- Clarifying expectations is extremely important. This helps to avoid misunderstandings and disappointment, which lead to withdrawals. Never assume that everyone has the same expectations if they have not been discussed openly.
- Showing personal integrity generates trust. Covey offers excellent definitions of integrity and honesty that highlight the difference between the two.
o Honesty is telling the truth, conforming our words to reality.
o Integrity is conforming reality to our words.
- Apologizing sincerely when you make a withdrawal. Repeated apologizes may be seen as insincere, and therefore constitute a withdrawal.

One of the most important ways to manifest integrity is to be loyal to those who are not present. This is an indicator to all who are present that they will be treated similarly when they are not present, and trust is established.

Tomorrow, we’ll get started on Habit 4 – Think Win/Win.
