There are many ways to earn a living on the Internet. There is also some confusion about the terms Direct Sales Marketing and MLM.

The term network marketing is often used interchangeably with MLM and Direct Sales Marketing. After all, both MLM and Direct Sales Marketing involve networking, and marketing.

There are two main differences between these two forms of marketing:

Distributor Levels:

MLM stands for Multi Level Marketing, and therefore you need multi levels of distributors to be successful. The main problem with this method of marketing is that people tend to move from opportunity to opportunity when they do not reach the level of success they expect. This makes it difficult to build the team size required to earn a living.

Direct Sales Marketing does not use the multi level model. Typically, there are only one or two levels involved in this method of marketing. Therefore there is not as much damage done to your business if someone leaves your downline.

Commission Levels:

MLM upfront commissions are typically smaller. It is via the sales of the downline that most of the commissions are made.

Direct Sales Marketing, also known as top-tier marketing, offers much larger commissions upfront. This is when most of the commission is generated for this business model. There are commissions earned from the sales of the immediate downline, but these commissions are comparatively small.

There are many ways to market your business online, regardless of which business model you choose.

Free methods include: video marketing, article writing, blogging, social networks, and free classifieds

Paid methods include: pay-per-click advertising, newspaper, magazines, and radio.

No matter which business model you choose, or which marketing methods interest you, be sure that the business you choose provides training in as many methods of marketing as possible. You may not want to do all the methods available, but you do want to learn at least a bit about each so you can try them all, and then decide which methods are best for you.
