Direct Sales Marketing – Facing Your Fears and Phobias
Posted by Nancy on Aug 27, 2010
Fears and phobias can hinder our chances for development and success, whether our goals are personal, work related, or for our online business.
Left uncontrolled, they can be debilitating, limiting our ability to live a normal and healthy life. The effects of fears and phobias are often felt by other people: family, friends, business partners, and co-workers.
A certain amount of fear can be healthy, keeping us on our toes, keeping us aware of what is happening around us, motivating us to learn new things. Fears can be used to our advantage, though this can be difficult for some people, and requires a great deal of self-control and positive thinking.
Fears can be the result of events that have taken place in our past, or the past of someone we know, or they may simply be a creation of our imagination. Some people tend to take a small, even insignificant concern, and blow it up into some kind of raging monster that they cannot control.
Phobias are fears taken to the extreme. Often times, they are irrational, but that is irrelevant to the person who is experiencing them. For these people, the fears are very real and devastating, and they know of no way to get past them.
One manifestation of phobias in through panic attacks, shortness of breath, and dizzy spells.
Fears can be rational, phobias are not. Whether it is fear or phobia, both can have devastating effects on our lives, paralyzing us, leaving us unable to act or react appropriately.
If we can determine the root cause of our fears, we may be able to rationalize them, and get past them.
Phobias are a different story. Phobias are not rational, so understanding the root cause (if there is one) may be of little help.
There is good news. Fears and phobias are emotions. Following this logic, if we can control our emotions, we can control our fears and phobias.

Hey Nancy… Thanks for a great post. As far as our brain is concerned there is no difference between fears and phobias… fear is fear and this is what causes the problem.
When fear is involved our brain takes the view of “better safe than sorry”. So with phobias we don’t get the experience of the thing we are frightened of to discover it’s safe.
But you’re right… controlling the emotions is the key to getting past the fear.

Hi Alex,
It is sad to think of how many things we miss out on because we let our fears take control. If only there were a switch we could flick!
