Business Training – Why Should You Set Goals?
Posted by Nancy on Aug 21, 2010
Have you ever wondered why some people have little or no success in achieving their dreams? The culprit is likely that they simply dream about what they want, and fail to set goals to achieve those dreams.
There is a saying that goes something like … failing to plan is planning to fail.
Setting goals is a huge part of any successful business endeavor. For one thing, if you have no goals, what is your measurement for success?
Your goals are your road map pointing the way to your dreams and the things you want to achieve in life. The goals you create are the basis for planning your strategy for success. Your goals and strategies tell you where to begin and allow you to monitor your progress along the way.
Done correctly, your goals and strategies will lay out a step by step process for you to follow, as well as time-lines for completion of each step. This will help you to determine if you are on track, falling behind, or ahead of the game!
Goal setting is proactive. It allows you to spot potential difficulties that may come up, and formulate a solution so you are ready in the event that these things actually happen. This can boost your self-confidence as you are now prepared for what may come.
Goal setting can also provide the motivation you need to get going!
Now that you have set your goals and determined the time-line for achievement, you will want to have a serious look at your outlook on life. Do you have a positive attitude? Do you need to work on your attitude? Do you have the self-discipline to carry out the plans you have made? These are serious questions you must ask yourself.
Here are some final tips to consider when setting your goals:
- Goals should be realistic. There is no point in setting a goal to become a doctor if you have no medical background and have no intention of getting the required education.
- Goals that are impossible to achieve are de-motivating. You will get frustrated and eventually give up.
- Analyze your capabilities to be sure they are sufficient to achieve your goals. If they are not, what do you need to do to increase your abilities to match your goals?
- Be careful not to set your goals too low. If they are too easy to achieve, you have not stretched yourself or your vision, and you will not grow as a result. It is very easy to lose interest if goals are set too low.
- Be sure to set a time frame for achieving your goals and stick to it.
- Remember to reward yourself for all achievements, no matter how small. This will keep you motivated to continue. Be careful not to let these small achievements derail you, thinking that you have done enough, if your goal is not complete.
You can use goal settings in all areas of your life, not simply for business.

Many humans never ever set out to reach their desired goals, or never set goals to begin with, for the reason that they have got a fear of disappointment or being rejected. Probably they don’t truly believe that they will be able to achieve this, or perhaps they erroneously believe that if they only tell themselves what they want plenty of times, their whole goals will magically be fulfilled.~ Gloria Bocci
Sad, but true.
I truly believe that anyone can do anything they put their mind to, with a few exceptions of course.
