Last time we covered the first ten causes of failure as put forth by Napoleon Hill in his book Think And Grow Rich.
Today I would like to have a closer look at the next ten.
11. Lack of controlled sexual urge. Sexual urges are very powerful and as such could be controlled and channeled to stimulate action toward success.
12. Uncontrolled desire for “something for nothing.” If we constantly chase the ‘get rich schemes’ we have little chance for success. As humans, we place little value on things we get for nothing, while our desires have great value and are worth the time and effort to acquire.
13. Lack of a well defined power of decision. Successful people make decisions promptly, and rarely change them. Procrastination and indecision are opposite sides of the same coin: where you find one, you will usually find the other. 14. One or more of the six basic fears. These basic fears will be discussed later in more detail, but for now they are: poverty, criticism, ill health, loss of love of someone, old age, and death.

Creating Success: Are Distractions Wasting Your Life?

They aren’t pretty, but you must consider the cold, hard facts. Distractions are wrecking your life. They’re even so common these days we often misinterpret them as a legitimate consumption of our time. Either that or for some sad reason we just don’t care. If we’re inundated with interruptions then we aren’t creating success, which means we aren’t living our dream life. And if we don’t live our dreams then we squander our potential.
Admit it now. Do you allow the following “weapons of mass distractions” to get in the way of the life you’ve always wanted?
Email. So much of email is drivel that simply wastes time. Make friends with the unsubscribe link on all those newsletters. Stop reading all the forwarded jokes and watching the endless viral videos. These emails add little to no value and certainly don’t advance you toward your goals. Read email at a set time and only for a determined period of time. A true time-dump is jumping back and forth between work and emails with no commitment to one or another. Understand that no matter your best intentions, the emails will inevitably take over. Don’t become a slave to your inbox.
Texting. Your life isn’t going to be much to speak of if it’s comprised mostly of texting much of the day. Do you want your worldview to be one of looking down all day at a tiny LCD screen? We have all seen people so habituated to mindlessly thumbing on their phone keyboards that they can’t even refrain from doing so while watching a movie in a theater. Now that’s a time-waster that’s graduated from distraction to a full-on lifestyle.
Facebook. Creating success doesn’t come from constant babbling with friends on Facebook all day. Do you really need to know everything that’s going on in people’s lives? And do they really need to know everything in yours? You can spend time updating your status reports (and reading others) or you can work toward a life-long goal. Which action gets you what you want more quickly or even at all?
Twitter. Reread the previous sections on texting and Facebook. If you’re reading this article then you’re obviously interested in creating a better you, so the following question is entirely relevant. Unless you’re using Twitter to gain an advantage for your business why are you wasting time there?
Pointless internet surfing. If your so bored that you senselessly click links, then maybe that’s an excellent call to action to bring about meaningful change to your life. You can either exist or you can live. It’s your call.
Television. I won’t tell you that television is all bad. It most certainly has it purpose. But when you allow it to become your brain’s babysitter for hours each day, you’re checking your life at the door. You won’t create success skills that cultivate greatness by watching reality TV programs all evening. It’s just not going to happen.
Whether these distractions or others, understand that they’re keeping you from – if not outright stealing – your ultimate life. And we so often welcome that theft with little to no struggle. We forsake a life of value and plenty for instant fulfillment, escapism and leisure. If you’re dreaming about wealth or any other measure of success, keep in mind that those instant gratifications are keeping you from making meaningful change – they’re keeping you from moving forward, which is where you need to go to fulfill your dreams.
The secrets of success aren’t really secret. In reality they’re just commonsense practices for realizing goals. So here’s a “secret” for avoiding pointless interruptions. Commit to an amount of time every day to knocking out your goals and block out distractions as if your life depended on it. Turn off the computer, phone, television, music – whatever it takes. No matter whether it’s minutes or hours, what’s crucial is that you give yourself a dedicated period of time to work on your goals, which is always time well spent.
Keep distractions from pilfering your life. Substitute them with a life of meaning and value and you’ll wonder how the distractions held such appeal to begin with.
